Robert Hall, author and entrepreneur, joins Taylor Tutor and Judd Wilson to explore the Law of Sacrifice and the true cost of leadership. Drawing from his experiences in law enforcement, entrepreneurship, and writing Badge Unbroken, Robert shares why leadership requires putting others first, embracing difficult decisions, seeking wise counsel, and having the faith to let go of what is comfortable in order to step into a greater purpose.

[00:01:22] Judd Wilson: that. You know what else I love about the IgniteCast podcast?
[00:01:24] Taylor Tutor: Tell me more.
[00:01:26] Judd Wilson: It's not just you and I. We bring guests in. It's
[00:01:28] Taylor Tutor: my favorite part.
[00:01:29] Judd Wilson: I love it. And we're getting to talk to Robert Hall. Yeah. I know who Robert Hall is. I've known Robert for many, many years. Robert, tell us a little bit about yourself.
[00:01:37] Robert Hall: Well, Judd, uh, and, and everyone, just glad to be here. I, I'm excited to, to, to be a former, uh, employee of, of CDF- That's right ... and, and then get to- Yeah ... to be back here with my good friends. Uh, just, just Robert Hall, uh, born and raised, uh, South Tupelo area, Tupelo, Mississippi. Uh, spent 20-plus years police department.
[00:01:57] Robert Hall: Uh, had the opportunity to, to [00:02:00] work for the Community Development Foundation. Um- You got to
[00:02:02] Judd Wilson: work with Darren, didn't you?
[00:02:03] Robert Hall: I did, when he was in the, uh, the basement. He's, he's, he's stepped up a little bit. And, and, and so, uh, went on. I w- I was able to learn here, uh, uh, and then able to go into my own financial practice, uh, which I love it under MassMutual.
[00:02:18] Robert Hall: But other than that, I started my own business, which is a medical training center, because of what I'd learned from CDF. Journey.
[00:02:26] Judd Wilson: Journey
[00:02:27] Robert Hall: Medical- Journey Medical Training Center. Yeah. Exactly. And, and so the, the roots and everything that I was taught here from, from David Rumbaugh and, and Shane and, and my great friends is, is, is real.
[00:02:37] Robert Hall: And Darren. And Darren. Yeah. And Darren. Yes.
[00:02:41] Robert Hall: So it's, it's been awesome. And so that's what I do now. I was able to author a book called Badge Unbroken. Yeah. We're gonna ask
[00:02:47] Judd Wilson: you about that a little bit
[00:02:47] Robert Hall: later. The Robert Hall Story. And, and now I, I, I just, um, I, I do my financial practice. I, I do the tour on the book. We was in Germany last year. That was exciting.
[00:02:57] Judd Wilson: Wow.
[00:02:58] Robert Hall: Uh, we're in, you know, seven [00:03:00] bookstores and, and, um, we are just trying to work hard and continue, uh, in the community. I think Lee County, Tupelo is the best place in the world to live.
[00:03:10] Judd Wilson: That's
[00:03:10] Robert Hall: awesome. I really do.
[00:03:11] Taylor Tutor: Hey, we do too, Robert.
[00:03:12] Robert Hall: Yes.
[00:03:13] Judd Wilson: So Taylor, did you mark all that down? I mean-
[00:03:15] Taylor Tutor: I got, I got a lot of it
[00:03:16] Taylor Tutor: born
[00:03:16] Judd Wilson: and raised here, law enforcement, entrepreneur, financial planner Author. Amazing.
[00:03:23] Taylor Tutor: What don't you do, Robert?
[00:03:25] Judd Wilson: Exactly.
[00:03:26] Robert Hall: According to my wife and daughter, sleep. So.
[00:03:30] Taylor Tutor: Well, I, uh, that rings true with what all you're involved in.
[00:03:33] Robert Hall: Yeah,
[00:03:33] Taylor Tutor: exactly. Yes. Well, Robert, I know you've been clearly very involved, and you've been h- here at CDF, and so I know you know a lot about leadership and been around a lot of great leaders.
[00:03:41] Taylor Tutor: So, um, we start every episode this way, and I'd like you to share your best leadership tip you've ever been given.
[00:03:47] Robert Hall: Well, I would tell you that it was actually from CDF, and it was David Rumbarger.
[00:03:53] Taylor Tutor: I'm not shocked.
[00:03:54] Robert Hall: And it was a silent tip, right? Because one day I was walking through the old building, [00:04:00] and, and we all know the level David is on.
[00:04:02] Robert Hall: We all appreciate him, uh, very respectful. But he stopped, did not know I was looking, and he picked up a paper clip off the floor. Wow. So that told me that even though he was a leader, he did what it needed to do to... when people weren't looking.
[00:04:20] Mm-hmm.
[00:04:21] Robert Hall: And, and he's always said that, you know, "What does a great leader do when people are not looking?"
[00:04:25] Robert Hall: And I saw that my own eyes, so I'm gonna say the silent tip from Mr. David Rumbarger. I love that. That's great. Yeah. I
[00:04:32] Taylor Tutor: think it may have been maybe second week on the job here. I've only been with CDF almost two years, and I looked out the window and David was in the parking lot picking up trash.
[00:04:43] Robert Hall: Mm-hmm. So you know.
[00:04:44] Taylor Tutor: So I know. Yeah. And instead of sending one of his employees or calling someone else to do it, he went out there and got it himself 'cause he wanted it to be clean in our parking lot. So- Yes ... yes, there's always eyes watching you, that's for sure.
[00:04:55] Robert Hall: Absolutely, and he had no clue, unless he could see in the back of his head, that I was [00:05:00] watching him.
[00:05:01] Robert Hall: But it solidified what he has always said, "What do you do when peoples are not looking?" Yeah.
[00:05:05] Judd Wilson: Yeah. Mm-hmm. So, yes. And that kinda shows you as a, as a true leader, and we all have that, you know, that what are we doing when people aren't watching because that's how we're gonna come out to people.
[00:05:15] Robert Hall: That's right.
[00:05:15] Judd Wilson: You know? That's
[00:05:16] Robert Hall: right. Yes, sir. Mm-hmm.
[00:05:17] Judd Wilson: That is, that is great. That is great.
[00:05:19] Taylor Tutor: Well, um, on this season of IgniteCast, we're focusing on John Maxwell's Laws of Leadership, and one of his laws is the Law of Sacrifice. And so he's got a clip that I want us to listen to and then talk about, so let's listen to that.
[00:05:31] John Maxwell: Leaders do not have the privilege of thinking of themselves first. Every moment of their day, they must be thinking about others. Now, this is a mature mindset, a total different mindset than a follower who every day thinks of himself or herself. And the Law of Sacrifice pretty much says to you and to me that what we have to do is we have to give up a lot of things that we would personally want for ourselves because it's not best for the people.
[00:05:57] John Maxwell: We sacrifice, we give up for others [00:06:00] so that we can go up together.
[00:06:03] Robert Hall: Wow.
[00:06:04] That's
[00:06:04] Robert Hall: powerful.
[00:06:05] Taylor Tutor: That is powerful. Robert, I wanna ask you, what is something that you've had to give up to get where you are today?
[00:06:11] Robert Hall: Mm-hmm. I, I think it's, I had to probably give up a job.
[00:06:16] Taylor Tutor: Mm-hmm.
[00:06:17] Robert Hall: Uh, simply because the position I was in, I wanted to be that leader, I wanted to be the leader of change.
[00:06:25] Robert Hall: And when you see things that may not be the direction that they need to lead, to, uh, walk in, you have to make decisions, "Okay, I know that I'm gonna be sacrificed, but what would I do for the good of others?" Mm-hmm. So if I make the wrong decision, how can I look the community, uh, my family, uh, my kids, uh, in the eye and say, "I know I done the right thing"?
[00:06:51] Robert Hall: And that's what I wanted to do. And so even though it's gonna cost something, uh, leaderships, you're usually sometime the first. [00:07:00] Uh, the first is a sacrifice sometime. And so I think leaders have to understand that it's not gonna be easy. Uh, when you step up and take the front road, y- you've gotta make decisions that's not always in the best interest of yourself, but the best interest of others.
[00:07:18] Robert Hall: Mm-hmm. And so, uh, I have had to do that. And, and sometimes you, you suffer setbacks, you suffer scrutiny. Uh, you may even suffer, uh, monetary loss, you know, which I did. But at the end of the day, uh, you have learned something that you can share with other leaders, and I think that's what we're all here for, is to, uh, to sow into the lives of others.
[00:07:43] Robert Hall: And when it comes to livelihood, when you're making decisions, I think that as long as you're sowing into the lives of others, you will always make a living.
[00:07:51] Judd Wilson: Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. And you're still doing that. I know when you were- Yes ... in the police department, you were pouring into the- Yes ... to the men and women that were underneath you.
[00:07:59] Judd Wilson: Mm-hmm. And then, [00:08:00] you know, I've toured Journey! with you, too, and it's neat to see- ... those folks that are kinda on the forefront of their career, and- Yes ... I mean, pouring into them to see, "Hey, I'm helping them actually get to the next, next rung." So it's really kinda putting away yourself- Mm-hmm ... and almost that silent tip you were talking about earlier.
[00:08:17] Judd Wilson: What am I doing to help others, even when somebody's not watching, but what am I doing when they are watching? A-
[00:08:22] Robert Hall: and you're exactly right. A- and that's one of the traits of a business. We know that a business, you know, had to be three to five years before you see a turnover of a profit. But, uh, once you have graduated over 300 students in three years, and now you see a student gone from a minimum wage job or working in a restaurant, which is nothing wrong with it, to making, you know, 25 to $30 an hour because you were able to do something on the shoulders that you have stood on.
[00:08:50] Robert Hall: To me, that's leadership and that's real change. So we shouldn't always look at the immediate, uh, return of profit or [00:09:00] immediate return of recognition, but the, the full story is, is how can you celebrate when someone moves from one level to a better level? And I think being in leadership and the sacrifices that we do it every single day, and if you're leading something and you're not sacrificing time, money, you know, the skin off your own back, then we're in the wrong spot.
[00:09:24] Judd Wilson: Yeah, yeah.
[00:09:24] Robert Hall: Yes.
[00:09:25] Judd Wilson: I like that.
[00:09:26] Taylor Tutor: Mm-hmm. Um, sometimes we think that a certain level of success means that you will sacrifice less, and what you're saying is kinda- ... what John Maxwell says is, "No, the higher up you go, the more you have to sacrifice." So talk about that, you know, the higher up you go, the more you have to give up.
[00:09:43] Taylor Tutor: Has that been true for you in your journey? It,
[00:09:45] Robert Hall: it's been very true, and that's why I call, you know, my, my journey is the badge unbroken. And so sometimes you can coast, you know, uh, kinda in, in the regular work in the ranks. Uh, mid-level you can kinda [00:10:00] coast, but once you move up to a certain level, uh, that is where you, you really have to, to be, uh, strong.
[00:10:08] Robert Hall: Uh, you have to be firm, and you have to know that what you're doing, you always need to be coachable and teachable.
[00:10:18] Mm-hmm.
[00:10:18] Robert Hall: And so what I've learned at those levels and those sacrifices, if you seek wise counsel, which is proverbs, you know, you always wanna keep somebody wise counsel around you to help make the best decisions.
[00:10:33] Robert Hall: And so one of the things I had to learn was is that I had a circle of people in Tupelo, uh, that had been around for a while, you know? That's why we say it's the Tupelo spirit. Uh, when those things hit or those hard times hit, I had a circle of people that I could go to. Uh, one of the things that I as, as a Black male, uh, have experienced is sometimes we get pulled along the racial lines, right, as for who we [00:11:00] need to cling to or who can help us, but I've learned in my practice of everything that I've done is that it's been a diverse area, and we've always said we'd be stronger together.
[00:11:12] Robert Hall: And so I've learned to put a, a group of leaders around me, not because of the color of their skin, but because of what they could share in me and willing to do that. So it is a sacrifice, uh, that we have to do. And, and the first thing that I say, you have to have those that are, are praying people and believers.
[00:11:32] Robert Hall: You have to have a spiritual foundation. Uh, you have to love God first. Mm-hmm. Then you love your family, and then there's work. If you do those three things, no matter how hard it gets, uh, things will fall in line.
[00:11:47] Judd Wilson: Yeah,
[00:11:47] Robert Hall: yeah. They'll fall in line.
[00:11:48] Judd Wilson: Mm-hmm. So let's talk about Badge Unbroken. I think I have this right-
[00:11:51] Judd Wilson: Robert. So it's sorta neat that you... It's just, it's your story.
[00:11:55] Robert Hall: Yes.
[00:11:55] Judd Wilson: Um, correct me if I'm wrong, did you... Was it a play first? Am [00:12:00] I wrong? Or was the play a little bit different- Yes ... or was that the genesis to write the book after that?
[00:12:04] Robert Hall: Yes, it was actually a, a play first. Okay. Uh, I had no idea that, uh, it could be a book.
[00:12:10] Robert Hall: And so we, we did the play, and the thing was the play did not really line up with the real story, and we had to figure out, "Hey, how can we tell this true, non-fictional story?" And having that circle, uh, I came in contact with Dr. Vaughn Grisham.
[00:12:27] Judd Wilson: Yes.
[00:12:30] Robert Hall: And so Dr. Vaughn used to ride with me when I was working the streets of Tupelo, right?
[00:12:35] Robert Hall: Uh, I was working SWAT, and we was working some of the, the worst areas in town because we had issues coming out of the bigger cities. And so I was told by my chief that I would have someone coming down and riding with me because he wanted to see about the communities we were working. And he shows up, and I come out of the station, and it's this older white man with white hair leaning against my car.[00:13:00]
[00:13:00] Robert Hall: And so we're about to go kick a door, and I'm saying, "Oh, God, this is not gonna work." So I look at Dr. Vaughn, he looked at me. I said, "Are you Dr. Vaughn?" He said, "Well, yes, sir. Are you Robert Hall?" And a firm handshake. And I said, "Sir, this is gonna be a long night." He said, "Well, let's get in the car and let's ride."
[00:13:20] Robert Hall: And he rode several nights. And so, uh, that's kind of... He's the one that influenced me to seek the writing. And when it come down to doing the writing, uh, he said, "I don't have time to help you with this." And then he looks at his wife, Sandy. His
[00:13:37] Judd Wilson: better half.
[00:13:37] Robert Hall: His better half. He said, "I can't do it, but Sandy can."
[00:13:42] Robert Hall: And she looks up like, "What?" You know. And, and we formed a relationship, and we worked on it for almost four years. Uh, worked it through COVID. And, um, it was tough. Uh, um, I'm a 50-plus-year-old Black man, she's a 80-plus-year-old white woman- ... [00:14:00] and we're writing a book, and she's a schoolteacher, right? But the relationship and what we learned from each other was astronomical.
[00:14:08] Robert Hall: The leadership skills that I learned from Sandy Grisham, I, I can't even really explain. And we got so close is I was sitting in her house one day, and we, we had hamburgers, and I had some fries. And, um, I'm looking at the refrigerator, and I'm looking at her, and I said, uh, "Do you have any, uh, ketchup?" And she looked at me and said, "Yes, it's in the refrigerator."
[00:14:34] Robert Hall: And so I looked back at her, she looked back at me and she said, "You think I'm gonna get up and get it for you?" So the moral to that story is, is, is when I was coming up, my dad used to work in the backyard of others. My mom worked in the house, and I would have to go and, and work with him as well, but he couldn't go in the house.
[00:14:54] Robert Hall: And so when that happened, you know, it taught me my, my dad couldn't go [00:15:00] inside the house, but I get to go inside the house and the refrigerator. So, so our relationship is so close. I, I call her Mom- Mm-hmm ... and call Dr. Vaughn Grisham, uh, Dad today, and we have a very successful project, we think.
[00:15:13] Judd Wilson: Yes. They... When...
[00:15:14] Judd Wilson: Every time I'm, I'm with them, they talk very fondly of you.
[00:15:17] Robert Hall: Oh, wow. So- I, I, I was there just Tuesday.
[00:15:19] Judd Wilson: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So that's neat, and it's neat how she kinda helped craft-- they both did, helped craft the play to the book, and now look at how many more people you're reaching because of that.
[00:15:29] Robert Hall: Yes, sir. It, it, it's astronomical.
[00:15:31] Robert Hall: And, um, one of the things that we're doing now, there's a documentary, uh, that's been filmed by David Crews and, and, uh, others out of, uh, Oxford, and so we're looking forward, uh, to that. And the reason that I call it Badge Unbroken is this: We often hear leaders and our influencers tell us that, you know, life done got hard and you've been broken.
[00:15:57] Robert Hall: That just burns me. [00:16:00] It burns me, and I tell you why. Because once you have gotten a circle of friends, and once you have been connected to the blood of Christ, this life cannot break us because He's been broken for us. Mm. So we can be stretched, and we can, you know, be hit and pulled, but I do not believe that we can be broken once we've been connected to the blood of Christ.
[00:16:22] Robert Hall: And so going back to leadership, when we step into position, we have to realize that it needs to be hard, because if it wasn't hard, anybody could step out front and lead. But then if we look at our success or where we wanna be, and we're successful, when we tell our story and, and we say that this was given to me, then success is really not success.
[00:16:52] Robert Hall: Right. But now if I can explain to you the hills, the mountains, the rough places, you know, the drawbacks, [00:17:00] now I can tell you this is the road that you would take. Uh, if I'd never changed a tire, I can't tell you, you know, how to change a tire. So we need to understand that there's gonna be turbulence in there.
[00:17:12] Robert Hall: And so I believe that a leader has to be out front. Most people tell you that the best leader is a follower. I don't doubt that. But I think a leader has to set the sights, then he has to monitor the turbulence, okay? And then he has to pull us out of where we are in order to get to the final vision of where we need to go.
[00:17:37] Robert Hall: And so to me, uh, all of the sacrifice is gonna come in that type of leadership. A- a- and be ready. There's gonna be some sleepless nights, uh, because of the turbulence. Um, I've been able to start a group called Project ELECT. Mm-hmm. Enthusiastic Leaders Engaged in Changing Times. I've been able to, uh, speak on stages [00:18:00] of over 1,800 people talking about, you know, staying the course.
[00:18:04] Robert Hall: Uh, uh, being, uh... sometimes you have to be detoured into your purpose. And a leader has the sights there, but that may not be exactly what needs to happen. And so the turbulence may have to detour us into something else. Mm. And now that's where purpose come in.
[00:18:24] Judd Wilson: And it's what we learn in those detours, right?
[00:18:25] Robert Hall: Oh, golly. Nobody wants to s- to go to a detour, you know- ... because... But if we think about it, in life and in leadership, those detours in the road always tell us that there's a bridge out, there's a traffic jam, and so now we have to go another way. But then we get there safely and accomplish our goal. Mm-hmm.
[00:18:48] Robert Hall: And I could go deeper in that, but I don't wanna. But I will say this.
[00:18:52] Yeah.
[00:18:53] Robert Hall: In the Old Testament, when it was prophesied that Christ would be born in the city of Bethlehem, [00:19:00] if you read closely, it was just a few weeks before the birth of Christ that Joseph and Mary were not in Bethlehem. They had to go there over the rough terrain-
[00:19:12] Mm-hmm
[00:19:12] Robert Hall: to get there to pay taxes. Nobody loves to pay taxes. And so that's why they ended up in Bethlehem, and that's where our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was born. So he was detoured to the purpose- Mm-hmm ... that we are following right now.
[00:19:26] Taylor Tutor: Mm-hmm.
[00:19:27] Robert Hall: Look at that.
[00:19:28] Taylor Tutor: Valerie Burton, one of our speakers at Ignite this year, just shared something recently about maybe the path that you're trying to stay on, if you get off course, is probably actually the right path you were supposed to be on.
[00:19:39] Taylor Tutor: So you said it just the way she says it, too. Wow. So, um, I hope to see you at Ignite this year.
[00:19:44] Robert Hall: I, I, I plan to be there. Yes. And, and I can really just correlate with that because I've lived it. Mm-hmm. You know, I, I can talk and I can speak it. Uh, had I stayed on the path, I said, "Hey, I'm gonna be the first Black chief in Tupelo."
[00:19:58] Mm-hmm.
[00:19:59] Robert Hall: But I don't think [00:20:00] God had that plan for me. Mm-mm. It w- it was my plan- Yeah ... mm-hmm ... but it was not His plan, but His plan has turned out to be better for me.
[00:20:07] Judd Wilson: I- i- impacting- Oh, God ... people you never would have.
[00:20:10] Robert Hall: Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. Of course. It's
[00:20:11] Judd Wilson: amazing. It's amazing.
[00:20:13] Taylor Tutor: Yeah. I wanna ask you this, too. Um, for someone who's listening who is maybe struggling with giving up something that's comfortable to them and, and letting go of that, what advice would you give them to let go so that they can go up?
[00:20:28] Robert Hall: Hmm. Whoa. She... Look at her dropping bombs
[00:20:33] Taylor Tutor: over here. Come on, Robert. Whoa. I know you got
[00:20:35] Robert Hall: it in you. For instance, when I knew that it was time for me to go, I, I... Well, I really couldn't comprehend it. Mm-hmm. But I had to go back to that job for a second time, and I realized that at this time, you know, when I was there, it was time to move, but I was afraid.
[00:20:56] Robert Hall: Mm-hmm. And that's those people that, hey, don't wanna give it... I was afraid to give it [00:21:00] up because I was afraid for livelihood. I said, "I've gotta work. I, I need to get my name back. I've gotta do all of these things." But when I walked out the back of the Tupelo Police Department for the last time, I looked over the city of Tupelo, and I'm a big Elvis fan, so I, I, I looked at the, uh, the, the store where he got his first guitar.
[00:21:19] Robert Hall: I looked over at CDF, and I say, "Well, God, you know, this is it. I can't figure it out. Okay? I know what I think I need to be, but I gotta give it up. I can't figure it out." And I said, "You put me here, now You fix it. Who are You?" You know? And I tell you, be careful of when you tell God to show you who He is.
[00:21:43] Robert Hall: Mm-hmm. For those people that don't wanna give it up- If you can't feel it in your heart or if, uh, the community or whatever reason it is, give it up and step out on faith. Mm-hmm. And a leader has [00:22:00] to have faith, because if they go by, you know, what they are, are feeling or the physical part, it's not gonna work.
[00:22:08] Robert Hall: It's not gonna work. So I'm gonna say that you give it up, you let it go, and you step out on your skills, you step out on the people that have mentored you- Mm-hmm ... you seek advice. Mm-hmm. And go ahead and make that move, because you're gonna know when your time is up- Mm-hmm ... to make that change. You're gonna know.
[00:22:28] Robert Hall: Uh, but don't fight it. Mm-hmm. It's a mistake. Yeah. Wow.
[00:22:32] Taylor Tutor: You're talking about, you know, seeking counsel and being around those wiser than you. Um, John Maxwell also has a law about the law of inner circle and who you surround yourself with, and we do have an episode about that coming out after yours. Oh. Oh, wow.
[00:22:43] Judd Wilson: Yeah,
[00:22:44] Robert Hall: yeah.
[00:22:45] Taylor Tutor: So stay tuned for those.
[00:22:47] Judd Wilson: Okay. You did a great lead in for us there, Robert. Wow.
[00:22:49] Robert Hall: Thank you. Yes.
[00:22:51] Taylor Tutor: Yes. Well, Robert, thank you so much for your time today, and thank you for sharing your wisdom, um, with u- with us and our listeners. Mm-hmm. And we hope to see you at Ignite this year.
[00:22:59] Robert Hall: [00:23:00] I plan to be there.
[00:23:01] Robert Hall: Good. And thank you all for having me. Yes. Always
[00:23:03] Judd Wilson: a pleasure, Robert.
